In a recent edition of The Hope Connection we mentioned Oliver Tingey—who was accepted into The Science Experience 3-day program at Adelaide University.
Oliver recently took part in the program which gave him a taste of what it would be like to study Science at university.
On Day 1 Oliver and his fellow students focused mainly on engineering and chemical properties of submarines and rockets.
Their first activity was to build a flotation device on a budget. Then they learned about how submarines are built and operated and created their own submarine design on a whiteboard.
Later they created mini rockets made from popsticks and a match with foil acting as fuel.
On Day 2 they went down to the Waite campus and learned about agriculture and farming. They calculated the brix (sugar content) in red and green grapes and tested their pH levels. They also learned about wine making and considered how insects might be able to be used as food.
Day 3, Oliver’s favourite, was spent learning about chemistry and pathology. The students extracted the DNA from strawberries and then learned about RNA and its tie with DNA and the rest of our body. Finally they looked at bacteria off packaged yoghurt.
Throughout this experience Oliver gained knowledge, made friends, and learned what university life could be like.
